Front view of a war. The Nuketown map is playable for free in Call of Duty®: Black Ops 4. In Blackout, Black Ops comes to life in one massive battle royale experience, combining Black Ops signature combat and the biggest map in Call of Duty history. Play as fan favorite characters and battle through iconic settings from the Black Ops universe.
It's funny, though, because I think this game would still work pretty well with advanced movement systems, so I wouldn't have minded it either way. But the community was fed up with the future stuff, so Treyarch ditched it.
#5 - You can play every mode in local split-screen with just one copy of the game.
This is a big deal. You can play multiplayer, Zombies and Blackout in split-screen. That means couch co-op no matter how you're playing Black Ops 4.
You can team up as a Duo in Blackout, or just play the various MP modes with a buddy (or family member) and you only need one copy of the game even when playing online.
This is something every shooter should come with, quite frankly. For instance, Halo 5 should have had split-screen and the fact that it didn't, and essentially replaced it with online co-op only, still rankles to this day.
#6 - This year, the PC version of the game is on Battle.net instead of Steam.
If you're a PC gamer, you won't find Black Ops 4 on Steam this year. Instead, it launched on Blizzard's Battle.net, home to Overwatch, World of Warcraft, Destiny 2 and a handful of other games.
This is a big move, and so far seems to be working in Activision's favor. The publisher reported over twice the player count on PC this year over WWII last year (which launched on Steam.) Unfortunately, there still seems to be a pretty big problem with aimbots and other cheats on PC, which is such a drag.

Multiplayer comes with all the modes we're familiar with, like Domination and Team Death Match. Sadly, it doesn't have the excellent War Mode from last year's WWII, a mode that I think should be in every Call of Duty game from now on.
It does have two new modes, however, that I think are really great. Heist is a bit reminiscent of Counter-Strike. You have to buy gear at the beginning of each round (though you don't lose guns) and the better you and your team perform, the more money you earn for the next round. The goal of this mode is to grab a bag of cash and get it to the extraction point. Extracting earns a victory. Most of the time, though, matches come down to which team gets wiped first. You don't respawn (though you can be revived) in this mode, so once everyone is down on one side the match is over.
Control is almost a cross between Hardpoint and Domination. You play a series of rounds where one team defends points A and B and the other team tries to take those points, then teams switch, with attackers becoming defenders and so on and so forth. Each team has limited lives, so victory either occurs when one team captures both points (or the other team defends at least one) or a team is wiped.
#8 - Health no longer regenerates automatically.
In past Call of Duty games, when you're hurt you just need to duck behind some cover and wait for your health to come back. This happened automatically after a second or two of not getting shot anymore.
In Black Ops 4 that's changed completely. In MP you activate a health syringe by pressing L1 (on PS4). Once it's used there's a short cooldown before you can use it again. Don't forget to heal yourself! It's crucial to surviving and you can't rely on the game to do it for you now. Thankfully there are no health packs to pick up.
That's not the case in Blackout. While you still use L1 to heal and you don't auto-heal, in the battle royale version you don't start off with any gear at all. That means you have to find guns, ammo, armor and so forth. It also means you need to find healing consumables. Without them, you're unable to restore health. Fortunately, like everything else in that mode, they're not hard to find.
#9 - If you want the DLC, you're better off getting the Deluxe version of the game.
Like every Call of Duty game, Black Ops 4 comes with a season pass, now called the Black Ops Pass. This includes:
- 'Classified,' a bonus Zombies experience, available at launch
- 4 additional all-new Zombies experiences
- 12 Multiplayer maps
- 4 exclusive Blackout characters
Only 12 maps is a bit surprising and disappointing given usually the season pass comes with four map packs with 4 maps per pack for a total of 16. That aside, however, it makes the most sense to not purchase this as a stand-alone item, and to just buy the Deluxe version of the game instead. Not only does the Deluxe Edition include the Black Ops Pass, it also has 2,400 Call of Duty points (used to purchase cosmetics in the game's shop when it launches) and some exclusive cosmetics.
The Deluxe Edition costs $99.99, which is just $40 more than the Standard Edition. The Black Ops Pass costs $49.99, so buying it with the Standard Edition costs $10 more than the Deluxe Edition. If you want the DLC, save ten bucks and get the Digital Edition instead.
#10 - Progression has been revamped thanks to Fortnite.
Not only is there a battle royale mode this year, there's also a completely new system for cosmetics and progression. Gone are the days of loot backs and RNG frustration. Instead, there are new seasonal Operations that come with a bunch of cosmetics you can unlock just by playing the game. You can read all about this new system here.
There will also be an item shop with items rotating weekly that you can purchase with Call of Duty points (which you buy with real money.) Again, this is better than buying loot boxes and getting random drops. You can just purchase the items you want instead.

The biggest problem with the game right now isn't bad spawn locations or the strangely molasses-like speed at which progression takes place in the Black Market. No, the biggest problem with Black Ops 4 right now is what appears to be a server downgrade that lowers the tick rate from 60 hz to 20 hz, making online play less responsive and fluid and leading to all sorts of issues.
It's still a great game, but this server downgrade (the beta's servers ran at 60 hz, lining up with 60 frames-per-second) really hurts gameplay, especially for truly competitive players. Treyarch has responded to the issue and you can read about it here.
#12 - Treyarch has been mostly really great about updates and fixes.
One thing I noticed during both betas and now after launch is that developer Treyarch has been mostly very good at updating the community about fixes and then actually making those fixes. Regular daily updates to the Black Ops 4 subreddit keep players informed, and the team working on the game is obviously very invested in fine-tuning it and making it better.
That's the good news. The bad news is that we still haven't heard about a solution to #11, though if and when that happens I'll make sure to update this post.
#13 - Zombies mode can be played offline with AI now.
I like this change. I'm not a huge Zombies fan and one reason is that I'm just not that into playing co-op games with randoms and I rarely have the right schedule to try to team up with friends. I also just never got that into Zombies compared to other modes.
But now you can play Zombies in offline mode with AI companions. It's pretty much impossible to play solo, but with the help of AI you can actually get through the maps. Given there's a lot more Zombies content than usual, this is definitely a good thing.

#14 - PS4 is still getting content before other platforms, but not as long before.
Since Sony's PlayStation 4 became the dominant platform of this console generation, Activision and Sony have had timed exclusivity deals for both Call of Duty titles and the Destiny franchise. For last year's WWII PS4 gamers got access to content a full month ahead of PC and Xbox One players.
This year the deal remains, but instead of 1 month early, PS4 players get content 1 week early. Special events like the Halloween event going on right now start a week earlier also, though they run the same length of time on all platforms, which means PS4 players will simply end their Halloween event a week before Xbox One and PC players. Which is weird, but better than it's been in the past.
#15 - It's incredibly fun.
I'm still waiting to write my full review, but I can say without flinching that Black Ops 4 is a blast. Even with the server issues, the game is just fast, frenetic fun in multiplayer, and tense battle royale goodness in Blackout. I'm not much of a Zombies player, truth be told, but just MP and Blackout make this a worthwhile game in my opinion. I do miss the single-player campaign, in large part because the campaigns in Call of Duty always serve as great tutorials and, more importantly, give us a world and a story to anchor the MP experience. It's a shame that's missing.
Still, it's an incredibly fun game. I had a great time with WWII and I'm having a great time here also.
